Musical Origins: Dave Koz, Mindi Abair, Gerald Albright, Richard Elliot

We caught up with Dave Koz and his friends Richard Elliot, Gerald Albright, and Mindi Abair on the opening night of their Summer Horns tour for a chat about their musical origins and influences.

The group has a very diverse history. One started with music by trying to emulate their brother, one lived on the road for the first five years of their life with touring musicians for parents, one jammed with the likes of Art Pepper and Horace Silver as a teenager, and one proved that parents always know best when it comes to sticking with music from a young age.

They also identified the likes of Tower of Power, Wayne Shorter, David Sanborn, Phil Woods, Maceo Parker, Cannonball Adderley, and Dexter Gordon as their main influences.
